Previews

Hi Funper! The reason for the rather bad-looking thumbnail of the preview image is because the image is too large, and so the scaling was left up to the browser, which doesn't do a good job of it (though that has to be, or else it'd freeze up the computer). It's a good idea to fit all preview images (of course the PDF/DJVUs are a completely different thing) within 2 megapixels, or at the very most 3 (2 mp better though) :) I had to limit the server-side resizing of images to 3 megapixel because the server is a small server, and cannot handle resizing more than that... --Feldmahler 12:48, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

Weber Piano Sonatas

Funper:

I'm curious why Liszt's editions of Weber's Piano Sonatas are under Liszt rather than Weber. Are they arrangements of Weber's sonatas, like the arrangements for piano of Schubert songs? Do they not have S. number because they aren't really Liszt's compositions but Weber's?

You tell me. Feel free to compare both Liszt's edition and the ones on Weber. Accually Liszt's edititorial works are much like transcriptions. You will see by comparing them both that the ossia in Liszt's edition is quite different from Weber's original.

I'm just curious to know whether you are going to submit all of his compositions or whether you follow a special interest.
To pronounce what I'm looking for: are you going to make his Religious Music available, too?

In my nearby library there are some scores of his choral works. I will buy an adapter for my scanner tomorrow, and the first thing I will do after that is to visit my library and ask for facsimile editions of Liszt's choral works. If I couldn't find any out of copyright editions, I will scan whatever edition of his choral works that I get my hands on, then I will provide you with a personal link. This will ofcoarse mean that I would appreciate someting in return to..

Paul Stetsenko

Funper, I'm not sure if I've done this correctly, could you check? There is a composer page for Paul Stetsenko, but the only composition on it is a transcription. Liszt's Winterreise transcription (S561)

Yesterday I bought another of Leslie Howard's CDs on Liszt works. This time was the second volume of Schubert's transcription. I went crazy about Liszt's Winterreise transcription. It's incredible (and also incredible recorded by Howard). Do you think it is possible to get this score? I did an unsucessful search at my local library. Well thanks anyway, take care. nachoBA

If you have access to Neue Liszt-Ausgabe, Winterreise is in the 21st volume of the 2nd series (FREE ARRANGEMENTS AND TRANSCRIPTIONS FOR SOLO PIANO). Personally, I think that someone who has played Liszt's almost complete oeuvre must have some very close playing-resemblance to Liszt himself. I one time heard an amature recording of the 2-piano version of Les Preludes (Symphonic Poem No.3) then I heard Leslie Howards recording of the solo piano version. I thought that they were the same! I remember that he also played Ave maria, S.558/12 very delicate (the songstimme being really "upfront" in his recording). --Funper talk 00:33, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

To date, I think that I have three different editions of the Transcendental Etudes. I use the one from Neue Liszt-Ausgabe when I am playing, but I don't think that there are any difference between that and the one from Breitkopf except fingerings maybe. Harmonies Poetiques et Religeuses (earlier editions) & other religious works

Hi Funper, 1st off, thanks for all your additions to the site, especially the hard-to-find Liszt scores! I was wondering if you might have some of the 1847 HPeR scores such as the Invocation (1st version), Litanies de Marie (2nd version), Hymne du Matin, and Hymne de la nuit. They should all be public, eh? Also, the two solo piano pieces from the Christus Oratorio should be public. I am very interested in them as well. I see you have quite a few pieces from the NLA. These pieces should be in vols 9 & 16. Maybe we could even trade if you have them. I have quite a few pieces of Liszt not on this site. New Liszt scores from collection

Hi Funper, thanks for discovering all those nice new Liszt scores. If you agree I've additionally uploaded monochrome versions because the original files are so large. nothing special...I use Adobe Acrobat to extract the color images as TIFFs with the following settings: monochr. compression: CCITT G4, gray scale/color compression: LZW, color range: monochrome (that's important) and resolution: automatically. Thus Adobe converts the images automatically into small monochrome TIFFs of about 40-80kB size. But this will take several minutes especially whith very large files...so one has to be patient, I just let Adobe work and wait for the result ;-). Then I use PDFCreator to make the pdf. Just let me know, I can create small files from other uploaded scores, too....some are really gigantic. Hobbypianist 13:46, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

Hobbypianist, I am sorry but I seem to be completely unable to convert the scans correctly. I am using Acrobat Pro 7 and I did what you told me step by step several times. I just can't get it right! Instead, I end up getting files that look like this:

It seems as if this is grayscale! As I said the most important thing is to tell Acrobat to extract and save the images in 1-bit monochrome. Of course you can extract them as they are and then manually process them with PhotoShop for example, but that's by far much more work. You would first have to increase the contrast to 90-100% in order to get rid of the light coloured areas and then convert the image into blackwhite. If Adobe 5.0 can do this all at once then the higher Version 7 should also be able to do it. Are there perhaps further settings for extracting / converting images in Version 7.0, maybe somewhere else in the menu bar, which you didn't take into account? Maybe I didn't translated the expressions 100% correctly: the 1st setting is Schwarz-Weiß-Komprimierung (blach-white compression) = CCITT G4, the 2nd ist Graufarben-/Farb-Komprimierung (gray scale-/color-compression) = LZW, the 3rd one is Farbbereich (colour range) = black-white resp. monochrome and the 4th Auflösung (resolution) = automatically. If it doesn't work at all, you can leave me a message whenever you upload a lage score. I can then add the smaller monochr. version. Hobbypianist 17:33, 4 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi, as you can see, I have worked out a way with Photoshop, but it took up to much of a time. I don't usually work with 7.0 but it is all I got on this computer, tomorrow I shall get my old one and try to work it out with 8.0 which I have on it. There are many 100+ mb scores but I think that those should be uploaded as they are (in color; maybe optimized to reduce filesize) since they are historical editions prepared for study purpose rather than for playing. Nevertheless, I think that it would be suitable if all scans could be prepared for playing, i.e. converted to monochrome. I shall give it another try tomorrow when my computer is ready, then I'll get back to you. For a start I can look after files >100 MB (those mentioned on the project page). I think the best way (and the least work) to upload them as they are is to split them with Adobe into ~25MB parts which seems a reasonable size. Or do you have a special program to compress a large file with color images? While I am at it I can also create monochrome versions. Btw, did you have success with Version 8? My computer didn't came yesterday, instead it will come tomorrow so I haven't had the opportunity to try it out. But when it comes, I will try to optimize the files losslessy to keep them under 100 mb, if that doesn't work I will try spliting them in half, e.g. Transcendental Etudes Part I: Nos.1-6, Part II: Nos.7-12, etc. If you want you can start converting some of the large files to monochrome, I will catch up with you tomorrow. --Funper talk 05:45, 6 September 2007 (EDT)
Some files give good results after conversion while others are rather poor. The colour images from Ab Irato for example don't have enough contrast to be converted automatically by Adobe. It depends on how they have been scanned. Not evenly scanned pages cause light or white stripes or blurred notes. Well, one could extract the color images as they are and process each of them manually in Photoshop (I tried it with the 1st page), but that takes a lot of time... I think I will first upload the files with acceptable results and at the end one can consider to convert the missing ones manually step by step. Hobbypianist 12:26, 6 September 2007 (EDT)
Some low contrasted scores can actually be converted to monochrome with good quality, by manually changing the threshold in Photoshop CS2. I had to do that with every page in Fantasia und Fugu uber das Thema von BACH. Quite good results. --Funper talk 08:03, 9 September 2007 (EDT)
I meant automatic conversion with Adobe 5.0 doesn't work with low contrast images... Of course, manual conv. gives almost always good results provided the resolution is high enough (which fortunately is the case with the present Liszt scans.) Composition list

Collection of Liszt Editions

Hi Funper! I just wanted to ask whether it is possible to split up that page into separate pages... there are 23 files on the page, which is way more than the 15 file hard-limit for the number of files per page. Plus, there is a natural splitting point anyway (by S number). Regarding the Dana Ruth collection

Hi Funper! I was wondering whether it would be possible for you to submit monochrome versions of the Dana Ruth collection for now, and the original color versions later. I say this because of a few reasons:

  1. The color versions really are a little too large: at 1.5MB/page it is more than 10 times larger than comparable quality scans in monochrome.
  2. The entire Dana Ruth collection is probably somewhere between 6-7GB. This would force me to upgrade the server faster than was planned. Bandwidth is not actually the issue right now, but disk space is rather precious... I don't mind one or two color scans, but 6-7GB of color scans is a little too much right now.
  3. The color versions really cannot be printed well on (currently commonplace) monochrome lasers.

I do recognize that this collection is one of a kind, so I'm not asking that you stop the Dana Ruth project, or that you not submit the color scans. I'm just wondering whether you could submit monochrome conversions of the scans for the time being, and wait until next year before submitting the original color scans, as the planned upgrade will take place in December/January :) Thanks! --Feldmahler 13:13, 22 September 2007 (EDT)

thanks for the note on CDSM - I don't mind just putting "commercially available resource" but then I wasn't sure if those checking would know enough about where it came from...

From now on, anything I upload that says "commercially available resource" can be assumed to be from CDSM unless specified otherwise.

We have discussed this before - we came up to leave it as it is. Precautions aren't really necessary in this case: it wouldn't matter even if the president of USA himself made a scan, the score and all scans thereof are out of copyright. Besides, there is nothing wrong with giving proper cred to classical-sheet-music, afterall scanning takes a lot of time and work.. --Funper talk 13:42, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

Hi. This NLA edition is to my knowledge copyright 2001 (Worldcat + NLA website), and not pre-1989. I can be wrong, but you'll have to prove that this publication is older. So its status is back on copyright review since this is the status with most evidence until now. Liszt or not, we can't make exceptions - how hard it might be for the enthusiast ... Frrtt....! (I'm sorry, this is the closest I can get to a very special sound, no matter how hard it might be to squeeze one). I assumed that it was Series 1, Volume 16 (Klavier-Versionen Eigener Werke II), 1982, Z.8859. since it is an original work, but obviously emb doesn't care about Searle's numbering (Raabe).
