The dedicatee was the second son of Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel (1820-1884). He was visually handicapped from birth, but supported many composers. He lived in Schloss Philippsruhe near Hanau.
The finale ends with several sections alternating between the Allegretto lento and Allegro appassionato.
