According to New Grove Dictionary, the compositions of Timmer are "unattractive". He began as a singer (tenor) at the court in Vienna, later becoming a valet there and eventually Schlosshauptmann in Schloss Belvedere. His brothers Joseph Timmer (der Ältere) and Leopold Timmer, were also composers.
