The mezzo-soprano solo only appears in the Preludio (Excelsior) while the baritone appears in the second part (Die Glocken).
The playbill for the premiere performance, March 10 1875 (reproduced in "Lettres à Cosima et à Daniela") describes this work as "Cantate für Gemischten Chor" etc.
