Historical Publication Info
typical Carnegie Collection cover 1929
History
Founded in 1907 by a group of English composers to promote British music (the name was an arbitrary decision). The firm quickly became a significant force with the publication of works by composers such as Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Stanford.
Major scholarly series include the Carnegie Collection of British Music (1917-28), The English Madrigal School (1913–24), William Byrd: Complete Works (1937–50), The English School of Lutenist Song Writers (1920-31), Early English Church Music (from 1963) and Musica Britannica (from 1951). The publishing group Galliard, Ltd., which included Augener, Joseph Williams, and Weekes, was purchased in 1972.
