The song's existence (as well as D.423, 424, 425, and 428) is mentioned in a January, 1858 letter from Albert Stadler to Ferdinand Luib. The song was never published and has been lost. Apparently, Stadler does not mention Bürger's name but the text of the first line he mentions matches the poem by Bürger.
