The earlier version of the piece (D.140) was written in 1815. Deutsch lists it as a version for 3 male voices (2 tenors, bass) and piano(?) ("Fassung als Terzett (2 Ten, Basso) mit Klavier(?)"), noting also that the Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe edition issued the work in a scoring for female chorus and piano (the AGA score is actually for three female voices: 2 sopranos, alto, and piano). The later version (D.496a), for which the NSA and Deutsch give a date of November 1816 (the date followed by a question mark in the NSA score) is scored for voice and piano (Deutsch lists it as "Fassung als Lied für Einzelstimme und Klavier"), and can be considered an arrangement of the earlier version. Deutsch does not list the works as "1st and 2nd version", probably because it is very rare for two versions of the same work to have different Deutsch numbers. However, the more current information listed in the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe website does identify D.496a as a "2nd version" of the work.

Given the confusion of the actual intended scoring for the 1st version, there are recordings employing the various scoring possibilities, for instance:
