The piece takes the form of a set of organ improvisations on hymn tunes leading up to the performance of the underlying hymns as chorales by the congregation. The chorales are written out for SATB, and presumably could be sung accompanied by organ or unaccompanied with the support of a trained choir. The piece was written for a performance in the Royal Albert Hall, London to mark the centenary of the founding of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society.
