According to Wikipedia, (Wikipedia/Sanford), Samuel Sanford had a minstrel troupe that was initially called "Sanford's Minstrels", and later was called "Sanford's Opera Troupe. It was an American blackface minstrel group. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the initial accompaniment was a band of some sort.
