According to Wikipedia, (Wikipedia/Sanford), Samuel Sanford had a minstrel troupe that was initially called "Sanford's Minstrels", and later was called "Sanford's Opera Troupe. It was an American black-face minstrel group. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the initial accompaniment was a band of some sort.
